Course Overview
This course is a legal requirement for anybody required to operate a builder's hoist in which personnel, goods and/or materials may be hoisted, and which comprises a car, structure, machinery or other equipment associated with the hoist, and which may be a cantilever hoist, a tower hoist or a multiple winch operation. Included in this definition are situations where winches may be configured to operate as hoists for the transportation of personnel for licensing purposes. It also encompasses the requirements for operating a materials hoist (HM) for licensing purposes.
*The installation, dismantling and maintenance of cantilevered platform materials hoists and mast climbers must be carried out or directly supervised by a person holding either a Basic Rigging (RB) or Intermediate Scaffolding (SI) Licence to perform High Risk Work. An Intermediate Rigging (RI) License is necessary to perform the rigging of external guided cantilevered platform (personnel and materials) hoists and self climbing hoists.
Course Content
- Compliance with WHS licensing legislation.
- Communicate and work safely with others in the work area.
- Risk assessment and management procedures (particular awareness of the risks associated with movement of loads and passengers).
- Pre-operational checks, operations of a hoist including movement the lifting of loads and/or passengers to the safe working rated capacity of the hoist, and shut down of a hoist.
- Appropriate mathematical procedures for estimation of loads.
Course Outcomes
On successful completion of training and assessment, participants will receive a Statement of Attainment for CPCCLHS3001A Licence to Operate a Personnel and Materials Hoist and a National Licence to Perform High Risk Work (Class HP). HRW Licenses are valid for 5 years from the date of issue.
Course Prerequisites
Participants must be over 18 years of age, be able to speak and understand English; understand technical concepts and maths equations; and provide adequate 100 points of identification.
If a participant fails to bring sufficient 100 points of ID at the time of assessment, a re-booking fee of $100 will be charged for another assessment to be rescheduled.

- There are no learning prerequisites for this course (i.e. you do not need to hold any other licence or certificate prior to attending this course)
- You MUST be over 18 years of age and have appropriate ID. Please click here for more information.
- You MUST wear steel caps, hard hat and hi vis when you come to our site for training. (All other course material will be provided by Cobra for the course duration).
- Tea, coffee and biscuits are provided, however lunch is not included so you must bring or buy your own lunch each day.
